Americans are notorious for wasting money on overseas travel and that is because they have a fear of landing up in unsavory locations due to the lack of knowledge of the cities they want to visit. So they reserve accommodation at high-end hotels and go from place to place by taxi. There is an alternative way to put aside all those fears and still get really good value for your money.
The three items where you can save big is the cost of the return airfare, the cost of the hotels and the cost of the local travel to and from the hotels every day. Local travel starts from the moment you land at the airport and this one cost factor can really be high if all you know is to call a cab. Items like cost of sightseeing and cost of meals are totally optional and you can make those decisions when you arrive at your destination.
I have personally used a website called
www.gotoday.com where you will find trips to virtually any and every place on earth. They have vetted every hotel offered and every airline they use and furthermore have categorized each set of hotels so that you can decide how budget conscious you will be and what levels of luxuries you are prepared to give up. When I went with my wife to London and Paris for a one-week stay at the end of September I can tell you we got fabulous value for money. We paid $1200.00 each for a 6 night/7 day package to London and Paris in September. Most 6 night destinations to European cities will be in that price bracket. August and September are good months, price and weather wise and also the month of May.
I chose the grade of hotel one up from the bottom, which is the low end “tourist” category and we found the rooms to be clean and in pretty good locations. The Go-Today website chooses hotels that are a little out of the city center but on bus and train routes that offer low cost local travel. The tourist class hotels offered a very nice breakfast all included, had nice to OK reception areas and hallways but lacked certain luxuries we take for granted like air-conditioning and room service and space. Besides that it was just fine for sleeping and washing after a long day out seeing the sights.
If you use the Go-Today website you will be able to check the name of the hotel offered and Google it to see what it looks like and where it is located on a map. You will be able to verify if it is on a bus or metro train line and if you can get to it from the airport by metro rail which is one of the cheapest forms of transport when vacationing. A little planning and investigating using the Internet will make your trip more predictable, taking away those fears of the unknown.
If you are not quite ready to book a trip right now, join the Go-Today email newsletter service and they will send you monthly specials that will help keep your dream alive. Now that the cost of overseas travel is within your grasp, think of all the places that you have always wanted to visit. Happy touring!
