A cruise to the Caribbean is one of the nicest and most memorable experiences you can have on a budget and actually still feel like a millionaire. That is because a cruise is one of your best value for money vacations you can take where they treat you like royalty all the time.

Budget conscious people will find that while the basic cruise is inexpensive, the add on items can mount up very quickly. One of the more expensive add on costs are land excursions which can run you $45.00 per person at every port. Now there are just some excursions that are totally worth it like a visit to the Mayan temples as an example but I have one for you that my wife and I did on Grand Bahama Island for $2.00 each

The cruise ships generally dock at Freeport, the main commercial and legislative city. Just as you exit the port go one street into town and to the right you will see many taxis looking like mini vans. These taxis are actually for local residents but they will go to any place on the island for a US $1.00 per person. You do not pay for distance, you pay a Dollar whether you go one mile or thirty miles.

My wife and I are in our 50’s so do not think this type of tour is for the young and foolish. Not at all, the mini buses are clean and well maintained and strictly controlled by the driver/owner who takes no nonsense from passengers and pedestrians alike. We chose one minibus going “to the other side of the Island” wherever that may be. The driver had us sit up front with him and as we went along he pointed out all the noteworthy landmarks and explained various things concerning everyday life on the island. It took an hour and 30 minutes to get to a beach on the windward side, which was his terminus and after a 15 minutes smoke break and walk around we headed back.

The total cost for a 3.5 hour tour was $1.00 there and $1.00 back for each. We offered a tip to the driver who graciously declined saying it was his pleasure to have us along for the ride.
