LASER DENTISTS OFFER A PAIN FREE VISIT No need to fear a Root Canal job.November 2007:How is this possible to have a pain free visit to the dentist, and a pain free Root Canal job? Yes!-Laser technology is revolutionizing the dental industry, with new technologies offering pain free cosmetic dentistry, cleanings, fillings and even root canals. The YAG laser works by spraying out a computer-controlled invisible thermal ray of light, burning the microscopic bacteria and decay from the cavity. The laser energy beam is specifically absorbed by the decay and gets vaporized. There is a cooling system of air and water particles which are activated and sprayed with the laser light not allowing thermal damage to the root of the tooth, while the decay is evaporated and the cavity removed- all without a needle or the drill – and with no pain at all. By using the Laser, the heat generated by the laser equipment first numbs the tooth where a needle would traditionally be used. Lasers are specified by the strength of activated wavelengths on the electromagnetic spectrum. The excellent YAG laser operates at an overwhelming 2940nm making it a strong enough laser to perform all types of dental procedures. Once the tooth is numbed the Laser dentist performs something called "microdentistry." Lasers are providing dentists with the precision needed to work on much smaller areas on the teeth. Cavities are softer than healthy tooth structure. Lasers preferentially remove softer structure before hard structure, as opposed to drills, which take away everything in their path. Additionally, fillings done with lasers are much smaller. Old school silver/mercury fillings have a minimum size requirement. As a result, even for a small cavity, dentists have to drill a large hole in the tooth. But bonded fillings only require that the cavity is removed, and they don't have to be any larger than that. But what about the dreaded ROOT CANAL! For patients who need crowns and root canals, the laser is the first choice. There are probably two reasons a patient needs a crown or root canal, and it is most likely on a tooth that had a large old silver/mercury filling in it. Either the old filling got tooth decay under it, or the tooth cracked and broke. Laser treatment can help prevent both of these scenarios. The laser sterilizes the tooth while removing the silver /mercury and then decay. This process usually takes a FEW MINUTES, as the laser penetrates through the enamel layer and deeper into the dentin layer, until the dark decaying tooth structure gets reduced. The laser light can be controlled by either increasing power for removal of deeper decay, or decreasing power for removal of superficial caries. So far not a tinge of pain! To use the drill at this point, as in the old traditional method, would result in removing too much tooth structure and risk damaging the nerve. The laser is able to work on a microscopic level not removing good strong tooth structure. And finally the healthy tooth structure is filled and sealed giving the tooth a second life. But, the best is yet to come, instead of an old silver/mercury filling, a white tooth-colored filling is bonded to the tooth and sealed. The tooth is actually stronger after the filling is placed inside than it was before. No cap is required and you walk away a new person. |
